Shopify Review for New Store Owners (2026)

Shopify is the best fit for new owners whose store is the business: clear fees, a big app store, $29/mo yearly. Site-first brands may prefer Squarespace.

What Shopify does

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. You get an online store with checkout, a free myshopify.com address, unlimited bandwidth, themes for the storefront, and an admin for products, orders, shipping and taxes. You can connect your own domain or buy one.

Shopify's help center also lists sales channels you can add from the admin: Google & YouTube, Facebook and Instagram by Meta, TikTok, the Shop channel and Buy Buttons. Shopify POS handles in-person sales, with Tap to Pay support depending on your country.

For email, Shopify Messaging lets you send email and SMS campaigns from the admin. The help center notes it needs an active paid plan; on a trial you can only send tests to yourself.

Every plan and what it costs

From Shopify's US pricing page, November 2026:

Plan Monthly Yearly Online card rate Staff accounts
Basic $39 $29/mo 2.9% + 30¢ Not included
Grow $105 $79/mo 2.7% + 30¢ 5
Advanced $399 $299/mo 2.5% + 30¢ 15
Plus From $2,300 Not listed 2.25% + 30¢ Unlimited

Basic, Grow and Advanced include 10 inventory locations; Plus goes up to 200. Premium cards cost more (3.5% + 30¢ on Basic), and international cards add 1%. POS Pro is an $89 a month add-on per location below Plus. Our Shopify pricing guide breaks down every fee.

What it really costs at two store sizes

Using only published US rates, yearly billing, standard domestic cards through Shopify Payments, and no apps:

Side-business store: $5,000 a month, 100 orders of $50. Basic: $29 + (2.9% × $5,000 = $145) + (100 × 30¢ = $30) = $204 a month.

Established store: $50,000 a month, 1,000 orders of $50.

  • Basic: $29 + $1,450 + $300 = $1,779
  • Grow: $79 + $1,350 + $300 = $1,729
  • Advanced: $299 + $1,250 + $300 = $1,849

At $50,000 a month, Grow is the cheapest of the three and adds staff accounts. Advanced only pays off above roughly $110,000 a month on yearly billing.

Add your app subscriptions to these numbers. For many stores, apps for email, reviews or upsells are a real monthly cost.

Strengths

Published, predictable fees. Shopify lists the plan price, card rates for online and in-person payments, and the third-party provider fee for every plan on one page. Not every builder does this; Wix's plans page, for example, does not show processing rates.

No extra fee when you use Shopify Payments. The help center says orders processed through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and manual methods carry no third-party transaction fees. If Shopify Payments is your primary provider, PayPal transactions are exempt too.

A large app store. Shopify lists "1000s of apps." Most of the specialized tools we review, from email to reviews to subscriptions, are built for it first.

Built-in selling channels. Google & YouTube, Meta, TikTok and the Shop channel connect from the admin, per the help center.

A guided setup. The help center has a full setup checklist, and Launch Check (in your admin under Apps) scans your store setup before launch. Our how to start a Shopify store guide follows those official steps.

Limits and watch-outs

No free plan. After the trial and the $1 months, Basic is $39 a month, or $29 if you pay for the year upfront.

Apps add up. Many features stores want come from paid apps. Shopify's help center warns that app charges can continue after you pause or deactivate a store until you uninstall them.

The 2% fee if you skip Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments is only available in certain countries and regions. If it is not available to you, or you choose another provider, Basic adds 2% to every sale on top of that provider's fees.

Basic has no extra staff accounts. If you have a team, budget for Grow.

Some features need Shopify Payments. The help center says subscription products need Shopify Payments as the primary provider, and the Shop channel needs Shopify Payments and a chargeback rate under 1% over the past six months.

You handle taxes. Shopify's help center is clear that tax setup and filing are your responsibility.

Who should use it

  • New owners whose store is the business, especially if you plan to run ads to product pages.
  • Anyone who expects to add specialized tools for email, reviews, upsells or subscriptions.
  • Stores that want to sell on Google, Meta and TikTok from one admin.
  • Owners who want to see exact processing costs before choosing a plan.

Verdict

Shopify is the safest choice for a new owner who wants to build a real product business. The fees are published, the setup is guided, and the app ecosystem means you rarely outgrow it. Start on Basic billed yearly, use Shopify Payments if you can, and keep apps to the few you need. If selling is a side feature of your website, a website builder will cost the same or less and fit better.

Common questions

Is Shopify good for beginners? Yes, if you are starting a product business. Shopify's help center has a step-by-step setup checklist, and Launch Check scans your store before launch. You do not manage hosting or updates.

How much does it cost to start a Shopify store? The trial is 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months. After that, Basic is $39 a month or $29 a month billed yearly, plus 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale in the US and any apps you add.

Can I use Shopify without Shopify Payments? Yes, but Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced or 0.2% on Plus, on top of your provider's own fees.

Do I need apps on Shopify? Not to start selling. Products, checkout, shipping, taxes, discounts and Shopify Messaging are built in. Most stores add apps later for things like reviews or advanced email.

How we put this together

We did not test Shopify hands-on. Prices, card rates and plan limits come from Shopify's pricing page, and features, setup steps and fee rules come from Shopify's help center (fees and costs, Shopify Payments, pricing plans and billing, the setup checklist and Launch Check), all read in November 2026. Alternative pricing comes from Squarespace's and Wix's own pricing pages and our fact sheets checked November 2, 2026. Cost examples use US rates only; confirm prices for your country before you sign up.
