For most new stores, Basic billed yearly is the right plan: the higher plans only pay for themselves through lower card rates once you sell roughly $25,000 a month or more.

The trial and how billing works

Shopify's pricing page offers "3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months." Its FAQ says the 3-day trial needs no credit card. Shopify's help center adds that if you pick a plan during the free trial, you are not charged subscription fees until the trial ends.

Billing runs on a 30-day cycle. Your bill can include the plan price, card processing fees if you use Shopify Payments, third-party transaction fees, and app subscriptions (apps bill on their own cycle). You can switch to a one-year cycle for the lower yearly price. The help center says subscription charges are generally non-refundable, and the pricing page notes a 2% monthly late fee on past-due balances.

What scales the price

Three things decide what you really pay each month.

1. Your card processing rate. This is usually the biggest cost, not the plan fee. On $10,000 of monthly sales, the difference between Basic (2.9%) and Grow (2.7%) is $20 a month. On $100,000, it is $200.

2. Whether you use Shopify Payments. Shopify's help center says you are not charged third-party transaction fees for orders processed through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments or manual methods such as cash on delivery and bank transfers. If Shopify Payments is your primary provider, PayPal transactions are also exempt. If you use a different payment provider, Shopify adds 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% of each sale depending on plan, on top of whatever that provider charges you.

3. Staff accounts. Basic includes no additional staff accounts. If you need a team in the admin, that alone can push you to Grow.

Extra costs to budget for

These are the costs that do not show up in the headline plan price:

  • Apps. Shopify lists "1000s of apps" on every plan, but many apps charge their own monthly fee. The help center warns that app charges can continue after you pause or deactivate your store until you uninstall the apps.
  • Premium and international cards. Premium cards cost 0.6 points more than standard cards on Basic (3.5% vs 2.9%), and international cards add 1%.
  • Currency conversion. With Shopify Payments, the help center lists a 1.5% conversion fee in the United States and 2% in most other regions. Conversion and card fees are not returned when you refund an order.
  • Gift cards and store credit. For stores created on or after May 12, 2025, third-party transaction fees also apply to store credit and gift card payments, according to Shopify's help center.
  • A custom domain. Every store gets a free myshopify.com address. You can use a domain you already own or buy a new one; the cost of a new domain is not listed on the pricing page.
  • POS Pro. If you sell in person at scale, POS Pro is $89 a month per location on Basic, Grow and Advanced.

What you'll pay: worked examples

These examples use only Shopify's published US rates, assume all sales are standard domestic cards through Shopify Payments, and leave out apps and premium or international cards.

New store: $1,500 a month in sales, 30 orders of $50.

  • Basic billed yearly: $29 + (2.9% × $1,500 = $43.50) + (30 × 30¢ = $9) = $81.50 a month.
  • Basic billed monthly: $39 + $52.50 = $91.50 a month.
  • Basic with a third-party payment provider: add Shopify's 2% fee ($30) and that provider's own processing fee in place of Shopify's card rate.

Growing store: $20,000 a month in sales, 400 orders of $50. Processing includes $120 in per-order fees (400 × 30¢) on every plan.

  • Basic (yearly): $29 + $580 + $120 = $729
  • Grow (yearly): $79 + $540 + $120 = $739
  • Advanced (yearly): $299 + $500 + $120 = $919

At this size, Basic and Grow cost almost the same. Grow is worth it here only if you need the 5 staff accounts.

When does upgrading pay for itself? On yearly billing, Grow's lower rate saves 0.2% of sales, and the plan costs $50 more, so it breaks even at about $25,000 a month in sales. Advanced costs $220 more than Grow and saves another 0.2%, so it breaks even at about $110,000 a month. On monthly billing, those break-even points rise to about $33,000 and $147,000.

How to pay less

  • Pay yearly. Basic drops from $39 to $29 a month, saving $120 a year. Grow saves $312 and Advanced $1,200 a year.
  • Use Shopify Payments if it is available in your country. It avoids the 2% third-party fee on Basic. Shopify's help center says it is only available in certain countries and regions, so check the supported list first.
  • Do not upgrade early. Use the break-even points above. Upgrade for staff accounts only when you really need them.
  • Audit apps monthly. Uninstall anything you are not using, since charges continue until you do.

When a cheaper alternative makes more sense

Shopify has no free plan, so if you only sell a few items a month, the plan fee is a large share of your costs.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Basic, billed yearly if you are starting out or selling under about $25,000 a month.
  • Choose Grow if you need staff accounts or sell more than about $25,000 a month.
  • Choose Advanced only above roughly $110,000 a month, or if you need 15 staff accounts.
  • Talk to Shopify about Plus if you need more than 10 inventory locations or unlimited staff.
  • Choose a different platform if you sell only occasionally and want a free plan to build on.

Common questions

How much does Shopify cost per month? Basic is $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly. Grow is $105 ($79 yearly), Advanced is $399 ($299 yearly), and Plus starts at $2,300 a month. Card processing fees are charged on top of the plan price.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees? Only if you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. Then Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced or 0.2% on Plus. With Shopify Payments, you pay the card rate only.

What are Shopify's credit card fees? For standard online cards in the US: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus. Premium cards cost more, and international cards add 1%.

Is there a free trial? Yes. Shopify offers 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months. Its FAQ says the trial needs no credit card.

Is Shopify Plus worth it? Plus starts at $2,300 a month. Its main differences on the pricing page are the lowest card rates, unlimited staff and up to 200 inventory locations, so it only makes sense for high-volume stores.

How we put this together

We did not test Shopify hands-on. Prices, card rates and plan limits come from Shopify's pricing page, and fee rules come from Shopify's help center articles on fees and costs, Shopify Payments, and pricing plans and billing, all read in November 2026. Cost examples use only those published US rates. Prices vary by country and change over time, so check the pricing page for your location before you choose a plan.
