Price: Xero is cheaper at every step

Both companies publish regular monthly prices. QuickBooks' page says there is no annual contract and you can cancel anytime. Xero's plans renew monthly until cancelled.

The bigger difference is users. QuickBooks caps users per plan: 1 on Simple Start, 3 on Essentials, 5 on Plus and 25 on Advanced. Xero's pricing page says there are "no per-user license fees" and does not list user limits. If you have a partner, a part-time bookkeeper and a VA who all need access, QuickBooks pushes you to Essentials at $85, while Xero Growing at $59 covers you.

Intro offers differ too. Xero gives new US customers 80% off the base plan for 3 months (excluding add-ons and payment fees). QuickBooks gives 50% off for 3 months and lists a 30-day free trial.

Watch out on Xero Early: the $27 plan allows only 20 invoices and 5 bills a month, and auto-reconcile is an extra $5/month. Xero's pages do not say whether Shopify sales synced by its integration count toward the invoice limit, so most active stores should budget for Growing.

Shopify integration: both are official, they differ on tax

QuickBooks. Intuit's help center describes the Shopify Connector by QuickBooks, installed from the QuickBooks Apps store. It records sales individually or as a summary, imports payouts (reviewed one by one or added automatically), posts Shopify fees to an expense account you pick, imports customers, and matches products to your item list by name. Taxes Shopify remits as a marketplace go to Sales Tax Payable, and taxes you owe are recorded on the sales receipt. The connector checks your Shopify account through the day, and transactions usually appear within 2 hours. The guide does not state a price for the connector.

Xero. The Xero App Store lists the Shopify integration "By Xero," free on all Xero plans, with setup support from Amaka. It syncs online store and Shopify POS sales, matches payouts from Shopify Payments and other gateways to your bank (handling fees, refunds and taxes), and records sales as a daily summary or as individual sales. It can bring in up to 90 days of history. It is rated 4.7 from 76 reviews, as listed on the Xero App Store in November 2026.

The catch: Xero's own Shopify page says the integration "does not account for sales tax in the US," and that you export sales tax data from Shopify for reporting and filing. For a US store collecting sales tax in several states, that is extra work every filing period. Outside the US, this limitation does not apply in the same way.

Neither company's integration page describes syncing inventory quantities from Shopify. QuickBooks lets you turn on inventory tracking in the connector settings, and its products are matched by name.

Inventory

XeroXeroPayments and accountingXero is cloud accounting software for small businesses, with invoicing, bill pay, bank reconciliation and reporting. Paid from $27/mo.Click for Scout's full analysis offers inventory through the Inventory Plus add-on on Growing and Established. Xero does not publish its price on the pricing page, so you cannot compare total cost without asking.

If you hold stock and want inventory in your books, QuickBooks Plus is the known quantity. If you track stock in Shopify or a separate inventory app and only need accounting, Xero Growing is about $81/month cheaper than QuickBooks Plus.

Other differences that matter for stores

  • Multi-currency: Xero includes it on Established ($97). QuickBooks' pricing page did not show multi-currency in the plan details we read, so check with Intuit if you need it.
  • Cash flow forecasting: Xero has a 30-, 60- or 180-day forecast by plan. QuickBooks lists budgeting on Plus.
  • Payroll: Xero Payroll, powered by Gusto, is $36/month plus $6 per person. QuickBooks' pricing page we read did not list a payroll price.
  • Bills: QuickBooks Simple Start includes bill pay with free ACH (extra ACH transactions are $0.50 each over the allotment). Xero Early caps you at 5 bills a month; Growing adds automated bill entry.
  • Accountant access: QuickBooks includes 2 accountant users on Simple Start through Plus and 3 on Advanced.

Common questions

Is Xero cheaper than QuickBooks for an online store? Yes, at every tier on the published US prices: $27 vs $38 at entry, $59 vs $85 in the middle and $97 vs $140 above that. Xero also has no per-user license fees, while QuickBooks limits users by plan.

Does Xero's Shopify integration handle US sales tax? No. Xero's Shopify page says the integration does not account for US sales tax, and that you export sales tax data from Shopify for filing.

Does the QuickBooks Shopify Connector cost extra? Intuit's integration guide does not state a price. Check the connector's listing in the QuickBooks Apps store when you install it.

Which has inventory tracking? QuickBooks includes it on Plus and Advanced. Xero offers it through the Inventory Plus add-on on Growing and Established, with no published price.

How we put this together

We did not test either product hands-on. Prices and features come from the QuickBooks Online pricing page, Intuit's Shopify QuickBooks Online integration guide, Xero's US pricing page, Xero's Shopify integration page and the Shopify listing on the Xero App Store, all read in November 2026. Intro offers change, so confirm current prices before signing up.
